I built this Prairie style walnut table in collaboration with Thomas Mudrovich, an Architect practicing in Wausau. Wisconsin.

Custom designed and built from teak, this set of three Danish Modern shelves were made to hold a unique collection.

I like ball feet, but don’t often have an opportunity to use them. You need a larger piece of wood to make them, unless you laminate up some planks. The feet on this chest were turned from well aged cherry in a friend’s firewood pile. You gat a good look at the base molding in this shot.

This was a very particular design request. The client wanted the drawers to hold a total of one hundred compact discs; no more, no less. I had to design the form around those capacities. I lathe turned the legs so that they were oval in cross section; as you walk around the piece there is a subtle change in their appearance. The drawer fronts curve slightly in their length and from top to bottom.

Known as a step-back cupboard since the upper section is shallower and it “steps back”. In Canada they refer to this form as a Wall Cupboard.

The Mahantongo group of furniture was produced around the 1830’s in a relatively isolated Germanic community in Pennsylvania. This is a sample that I copied directly from an original.

These large “step-back” cupboards are my favourite pieces to build, but their size makes them somewhat demanding during construction since my workshop is on the small side. And then there is moving them which is a treat given their size and weight. At least they are in two sections!

A design typical of the Lancaster county region of southeastern Pennsylvania and adjacent Maryland. Like its continental predecessor it maintains an arcaded facade.

This decorated pine Blanket Chest was crafted to be auctioned at a “Chair-ity” fundraiser for the Ann Arbor, Michigan Hospice. As I recall it was about 52 inches in length. The pine wood body is faux-painted, and the floral panel designs are derived from a number of sources, but primarily inspired by those motifs used by Pennsylvania Dutch.

The elaborately fret-sawed base profile is typical of many continental chests.

These small storage areas are typical of continental chests. The lid of this “Till” is the support fot the chest lid. These tills are usually on the left side as you open the chest but you occasionally find them on the opposite end. A bit more uncommon are two tills, one at each end.

Windsor Chair

About 16 inches tall, this is not much smaller than more typical spice chests. Interpreted by an illustration in the book “The Pennsylvania Spice Box: Paneled Doors and Secret Drawers” by Lee Ellen Griffith, Publisher: Chester County Historical Society, 1986 ISBN-10: 092970603X.

These boxes began as a way to use small pieces of left over wood that was just too nice to discard.

I built this coffer with octagonal legs and decorative end brackets inspired by Limbert furniture.

I’ve made a couple of dozen versions of these boxes, all about the size of a typical tissue box. This one veers towards the early 20th century “Mission” style.

One of a set of three pieces commissioned for a church, this was to be used as the Altar. As I recall the table was about 48 inches from side-to-side. Typically, pieces in this style are much darker in color usually from a chemical fuming process.

A “credence” table in the Arts & Crafts style, one of three pieces commissioned for a church. The client preferred a lighter natural finish which is unusual for this style of furniture.

This lectern is one of three pieces commissioned for a church. I recall that I really enjoyed building this particular piece.

The acanthus leaf is a very common element in older architecture and on furniture. You will see them on a U.S. Dollar and engraved onto high-end hunting guns and some leather work. This was part of a group of studies done in mahogany.
